Description Michael Spiegel CLA 2005-03-06 14:09:41 EST
Hi folks,

This is really a request to find out a level of interest on the Eclipse CVS
developer team. Myself and John C. Landers have built a plugin to view the log
entries for a CVS repository (http://cvschangelog.sourceforge.net/). However,
neither of us been actively working on this project for the past six months.
The plugin is still getting about 200 downloads a month, and we generally
receive positive feedback. On one hand, I hate to see such a good idea go to
waste. But OTOH I am abhorrent to the idea of "passing the buck along" and
dumping work onto someone else. So I just wanted to ask around if other
developers have interest on this idea?

One big problem is that some big parts of the plugin were poorly designed, and
they probably need to be rewritten from scratch. (Yes, I'm embarressed to admit
that. But it was our first Eclipse plugin). It's been a while since I've
looked at the code myself. But the last time I did, I was trying to add support
for CVS tags and branches. And the deficiencies in the design made this
insurmountable.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Michael, I'm not sure what you are requesting here. Are you asking if I want
to take your plugin and incorporate it into the Eclipse CVS plugin? The answer
to that question is no. I do think it is a really good idea but we (the
Team/CVS Team) don't have the manpower to do any work on this (and it sounds
like there is a lot of work to do).

What I am hoping to do in the near future is set up a page on "Contributing to
Eclipse CVS". I will be sure to include a link to your work so that other will
be aware of it and try it out. They can then decide if they want to contribute
to it. I'm marking this as 3.1. M7 as a reminder to do the above.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for writing back to me. That sounds like a good way to proceed. It's a
shame that I'm going to continue to get emails that say "this doesn't work for
CVS branches" or "this doesn't work for CVS tags". Oh well. If they feel that
strongly about it, they should redesign it (because it needs that).

Cheers,

Icreated a community page and added a link to your plugin:

Hi Michael,

Thank you for arranging that. This happens to coincide with the end of my
academic semester, and I am planning on revisiting the CVSChangeLog plugin. I'm
going to redesign it and correctly this time. I hope to have some sort of
high-level document finished by the end of this week with the new goals and the
new architecture. I hope you don't mind if I send you a copy, for a quick
lookover and tell me if I'm doing something stupid.

Sure, I'll have a look.
