After refreshing a project in the package explorer, the selected element showed
the wrong background colour underneath its text.  Screeenshot attached.

Hmm, this may be related to bug 74771..

This looks more like a SWT/GTk problem. JDT/UI is doing anything with the 
background color.

Moving to SWT.

Is this the bug in GTK that we worked around by simply disabling the feature 
in some versions of GTK?

It is because the workbench is setting the background color to white.

The SWT bug is that the widget shows the user-defined background/foreground 
colors instead of the selection colors.
