Description Kit Lo CLA 2004-08-31 18:14:15 EDT
JDT Editor uses "Ctrl+/" for "Toggle comment", "Ctrl+Alt+/" for "Add block
comment" and "Ctrl+Alt+\" for "Remove block comment". On the french keyboard,
to get a backslash, the user has to hit AltGr and to get a forward slash, Alt.
Therefore, the combination of keys seems impossible on a French keyboard.
Comment 1 Kit Lo CLA 2004-09-01 09:01:27 EDT
Just a typo. I meant:
>JDT Editor uses "Ctrl+/" for "Toggle comment", "Ctrl+Shift+/" for "Add block
comment" and "Ctrl+Shift+\" for "Remove block comment".
Comment 2 Dani Megert CLA 2004-09-01 09:18:29 EDT
In order to properly fix this we need to change the exisint key sequence for
Add/Remove Block Comment. Platform UI (Doug) told us not to provide additional
key sequences to suppport different keyboards/locales as we did for for Ctrl+/
(we added Ctrl+7).
Comment 3 Dani Megert CLA 2004-09-01 09:21:09 EDT
Note Ctrl+/ (press Ctrl+Shift+7) and Ctrl+7 should work in R3.0.
See also bug 46588.
Comment 4 Kit Lo CLA 2004-09-01 11:27:17 EDT
Does it mean that "Ctrl+/" will work on a French keyboard in R3.0,
but "Ctrl+Shift+/" and "Ctrl+Shift+\" will not work?
Comment 5 Dani Megert CLA 2004-09-01 11:50:04 EDT
Correct.

Is this fixed in 3.1? Any update?
Comment 8 Tom Hofmann CLA 2005-07-21 16:13:04 EDT
Still open -> not fixed in 3.1 ;-)

There are plans currently to change the key bindings that many people are used
to; also, the keybindings on plain alphabetic keys are all taken, so unless
there is platform-wide keybinding reassignment / management in place, there is
not much chance we will do anything here.

Any chance to fix this for 3.2? Not working on German keyboard either :(
My suggestion would be to either fix or remove the wrong keyboard shortcut declarations from the menues...

>Any chance to fix this for 3.2?
No. 3.2 is already in the end game phase. This bug "only" affects some keyboard layouts and can be easily worked around by assigning a different key binding.

>Not working on German keyboard either :(
What keyboard then?

Comment 14 Andreas Goetz CLA 2006-05-23 05:23:12 EDT
Daniel, not sure what you mean- normal 102keys German keyboard layout everybody in Germany uses?
Comment 15 Dani Megert CLA 2006-05-23 05:26:57 EDT
I misinterpreted your comment "Not working on German keyboard either" - I meant you want to express that you don't work on a German keyboard. This bug covers that as well (see bug 96076 which is marked as duplicate of this one).
Comment 16 Amy Wu CLA 2006-05-23 10:51:28 EDT
WTP's source editors use the same keybindings to be consistent, so I added a dependency from our bug to this one to make sure we all stay consistent once this bug has been fixed.

And according to our bug, the ctrl+shift+/ keybinding does not work on norwegian keyboards either.

Let's try again- can we address this issue for 3.3?

I'd really love to Ctrl-/ (Ctrl-Shift-7 on German keyboard) in the java editor...

Thanks,
Andi

Ctrl+/ should work - at least it works for me having a Swiss German keyboard which - AFAIK - is the same regarding '/' i.e. it is Shift key + '7' key. Of course the other one to invoke "Add Block Comment" doesn't work.

To be honest there's not much we (Platform Text) can do except using a different key binding sequence. However, all [F*] and also all [whatever modifier] + [a..z] are already taken which means we would have to assign a more complicated one like e.g. Esc,T and Esc,B. Which I think is not worth the effort. Reassign a command that you don't use often and learn it.

Comment 21 Eclipse Genie CLA 2020-01-31 12:13:10 EST
This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet. As such, we're closing this bug.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it and reopen this bug. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
