Description Pierre Scemla CLA 2004-07-02 09:28:07 EDT
The Middle-click diesn't seem to be used at all in eclipse 3.0.
For instance, It would be nice to be able to close an editor with a Middle-click
in the editor tab.
Comment 1 Douglas Pollock CLA 2004-07-05 11:48:27 EDT
Do you mean on Windows XP? Middle-click has a special meaning on Linux, and
most Mac machines only have one mouse button.
Comment 2 Pierre Scemla CLA 2004-07-06 03:49:10 EDT
Yes on Windows. I forgot it had a special meaning on unixes, sorry.
I just thought of it when I tried to close an editor with a middle-click ( which
is the way I close tabbed browsers in Firefox). I really think it would be a nice
feature to have, it's a lot quicker to click anywhere on the tab to close an
editor than to point and click on the cross icon: it doesn't require as much
precision.
Comment 3 Douglas Pollock CLA 2004-07-06 08:48:51 EDT
Changing Platform and OS to correspond with comment #1 and comment #2. I'd
recommend against doing this, as it doesn't seem to be native behaviour on
Windows XP, and seems to require special functionality for Windows-only.

What does Firefox do on Linux then?
Comment 4 Billy Biggs CLA 2004-07-06 09:12:23 EDT
Firefox 0.8 on Linux does not seem to respond to middle-click on a tab.
Comment 5 Billy Biggs CLA 2004-07-06 09:42:48 EDT
... and neither does Firefox 0.9 on Linux.
Comment 6 Michael Van Meekeren CLA 2004-07-13 15:56:44 EDT
This seems non-standard based on the comments following the original. There are
however other options such as Ctrl+W from the keyboard.

I did not find any closeable tabs in bare Windows XP to determine whether that's
"standard" or not.

IMO, Eclipse should also support this useful feature (and offer a preference for
those who don't like it). Let's follow the path of other successful "tabbed
browsing" applications!

Now it has become standard even in IE7 (in addition to Firefox, Opera, ...).

I would also very much like to see this feature implemented for the Windows version of Eclipse, as I find myself automatically trying to middle-click close tabs in eclipse. I believe the feature is standard in a lot of programs with tabs, the Trillian chat program comes to mind, in addition to the already mentioned Firefox, IE7, and Opera web browsers.

I have just discoverred there is actually already a plugin which does this, but I think it is something which deserves to be done natively within eclipse.

For anyone that wants to get the plugin for this, it can be found here: http://www.hlsoft.com/clickclosestab_eclipse

Looks like this has been implemented for I20071127-0800.

Yes indeed. Btw, I didn't realize that Firefox (2.0) on Linux does not support middle-click-closing of tabs. It behaves strangely - some kind of paste operation to the URL field seems to be going on.

If middle-click-closing of tabs in Eclipse bothers Linux people, we should discuss this again.

About the Mac - yes, most Macs only have one mouse button, so I don't think this feature would hurt them. ;-)
