In M9 and RC1, trees such as the package explorer or the outline view don't show the selected item(s) when they don't have focus. This is particularly annoying for the "Link with editor" option, which looses a big part of its interest if the selected item is not visible. This problem does not occur on Windows. It does on Mandrake10 and SuSE9.0 with KDE. It worked properly with M7 on the same config.
I believe this is a usability bug in kcontrol/krdb. It is really annoying for lots of Gtk+-2.0 apps. See: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=82619 A workaround is to go to: KDE menu > Settings > Control center > Appearance and Themes > Colors and uncheck the box "Apply colours to non-KDE applications".
Billy, your workaround worked, thanks. It might be necessary to warn users about this issue, and this workaround.
Carolyn, please add to our FAQ and then close.

I checked and saw that this is mentioned in the FAQ, so I am closing this bug.
it will be nice to have a link to the faq entry here, for users who will get to this bug before finding the faq entry.
Here's the link, but the text in this bug is actually a little more descriptive :) http://dev.eclipse.org/viewcvs/index.cgi/%7Echeckout%7E/platform-swt-home/faq.html#gtkselectiongone
