In vim I can quickly mark a spot that I wish to return to and return to it easily by using another key combination. For example by typing ma in command mode to mark a, then typing 'a to return to it, similarily you can do mb, 'b. In JBuilder I can type ctrl-shift-1 to mark a bookmark, and then I type ctrl-1 to return to that bookmark. There are 10 possible such bookmarks that can be marked in this way. This feature is really handy, as I can mark a spot in the code with a simple key combination, go somewhere else, and then return to the bookmark with another simple key combination. The eclipse bookmark utility is more powerful, but not as useful. What I really want is a simple key combination to go to a bookmark, and a simple key combination to set a bookmark.

Funny how things happen sometimes. I filed the other feature request with the same wish right after this one had been entered. Here is the text I wrote over there in the other bug: I would like to see bookmarks, which can easier be navigated than by the bookmark view. What I have got used to in other editors is that one can set (or remove if set already) bookmarks (implicitely named 0 through 9) by a simple hotkey. For instance ctrl+shift+0 toggles bookmark 0 in the current line. The shortcut ctrl+0 would bring me to that bookmark (similar for the other 9 numbers). This alone would be a tremendous help as I don't need to leave the keyboard when navigating bookmarked places. However another important thing should be added too. If I set a bookmark, which is already set in another line then remove the old location and use the new one for this bookmark. This way, for instance, one can use a certain bookmark to always locate the current work place in source code (which semi-automatically moves by repeatedly pressing the shortcut in the next lines where one works). So the big advantage of quick bookmarks over the existing solution is that they can be used with the keyboard and do not require mouse input. Hence they would be a great addition to the current solution. Mike -- www.soft-gems.net
As another example, DevStudio provides Ctrl-F2 to toggle a quick bookmark and F2 cycles through all quick bookmarks.
It does not look so that quick bookmarks would make it into 3.0. At least with RC2 there is no such feature. What a pity.
There is an enhanced version of Quickmarks (1.0.10 for Eclipse 2.1.x) available at http://eclipse-tools.sourceforge.net/quickmarks/ since today. It works by default in "Borland" style, but can be completely switched to "Microsoft" style or give you the best of both worlds. It is highly configurable (e.g. you can have one Set of Quickmarks per Workspace, Project, Folder or Document) and well documented. It runs basically in Eclipse 3.0 too in compatibility mode, a native port to Eclipse 3.0 is underway. I consider this the "ultimate" solution to all quick bookmarking functionality in Eclipse!
Thank you very much Georg. This is very much appreciated (jetzt fühle ich mich richtig heimisch in Eclipse ;-)). Btw: How's that the status bar text is in german? Is it because you haven't translated the messages into english or do you have several localizations? Mike -- www.soft-gems.net
The plugin is localized partially (default is english, german translations are in place). If any german user doesn't like that feel free to remove the messages_de.properties file from the jar. If any other nice guy is able to provide translations into other languages I will be happy to add the contribution. In a future version I'll move the localization into a fragment.
