Description David Screen CLA 2004-03-24 06:26:23 EST
Opened from comments on 37667:

Initially couldn't find how to redefine keyboard shortcuts. What really threw
me was the "Window->Keyboard shortcuts" menu. This would be the obvious place to
look ; I didn't know then that *everything* was in Preferences. I did eventually
find it in Help system.- more under "bindings" than "shortcuts". A hint in the
"Welcome" page would be nice, or a shortcut in the menu which takes you to the
preferences.

Nick Edgar replied:

"A "Customize..." item in the Keyboard Shortcuts menu would be a good
breadcrumb. Having it in the Welcome experience is worth considering too,
though we generally want to avoid overwhelming the first-time user with advanced
options. Perhaps a single "Customizing the product" item point to a decent help
section would be good. Dejan?"

I think on the "Welcome Eclipse Platform" page, a section pointing towards
"Preferences" may be good. Its unbelievable how much stuff there is actually in
there. I always found myself thinking "i wish it did this", when there was an
option in the prefs somewhere. I would have benefitted from having some of the
preferences (e.g. editor, java, keys) pointing out to me, more than CVS or
"customizing perspectives". Also the "Tips and Tricks" sections are great, but i
think should be pushed in your face a bit more in the welcome page.

There is a constant struggle to define what 'Welcome' experience should be. We
have a situation of a new user that really does not know where to start -
that's why we have overview, tutorials and samples - three different ways of
getting familiar with Eclipse based on different learning styles (reading,
hand-holding and learning through sample code). The last page is for people
that already know Eclipse and want to find out what is new, how to migrate,
how to update etc.

Learning what exists in the preferences is more to the tune of 'how to
customize my Eclipse' and I doubt that is the first thing a new user wants to
do (many of the concepts in the Preferences may be hard to absorb for the
first-time user). However, we will continue to search for new ways to help
users discover Eclipse features and Welcome is just one important mechanism to
do that.

I agree that 'Tips and Tricks' should be hooked from Welcome too.

In Eclipse 3.6 Help/Key Assist shows the shortcuts and has a link to the preference page that defines the shortcuts. Closing.
