Description Wayne Beaton CLA 2019-01-09 16:27:41 EST
Is it possible to migrate content from polarsys.org/forums to eclipse.org/forums?
Comment 1 Wayne Beaton CLA 2019-11-08 15:20:33 EST
At this point, we do not know how to, or whether or not we can, migrate the forums. AFAICT the forums are being used and it does seem that at least some project teams are engaging their community there (though it does seem that a lot of questions do go unanswered).

My strong preference is to just shut down this forum. Project teams that want to use this channel can ask the webmaster to create one on eclipse.org/forums (FWIW, we consider the forum software to be deprecated, so we don't generally create forums for new projects).

If there is reason to preserve the forums, somebody needs to make a case for webmaster investment in researching and implementing a migration solution.

Hi,

Just for information, what would be the replacement for forum on eclipse.org ?

I have seen that there is a mattermost.eclipse.org and for instance a forum channel for CDT, https://mattermost.eclipse.org/eclipse/channels/cdt-forum

It is the recommended tool ?

Thanks
Philippe

We don't have anything concrete as of yet. We are investigating GitLab via Bug 537913 which can integrate with many other tools, but in terms of Forums, we have no immediate plans.

The mattermost instance at mattermost.eclipse.org is community-run and not officially supported by the Foundation.
Comment 4 Wayne Beaton CLA 2019-11-15 13:18:34 EST
The PolarSys Forum does appear to be active, but it sees very little traffic. AFAICT, project committers are not engaging on the channel.

My recommendation is that we put the existing forum into read-only mode for six months, and then shut it down.

Project teams that want a forum, may request that one be created on eclipse.org/forums (open a bug on Community > Forums and Newsgroups)

The Capella forum is active and a means to exchange information between developers and users. There is few traffic for other ones. I'm doubtful when I see no post for some projects since one year. Are they still active?
Comment 6 Eclipse Webmaster CLA 2019-12-09 15:52:21 EST
I've moved all of the forums(aside from Capella) into the 'archived projects' section. I've posted a closure notice on the Capella general forum and have disabled new posts.

The header has also been updated to point people at www.eclipse.org/forums.

At this time I'll leave things as they are until May 2020 at which point we will simply redirect to the Eclipse.org forums.

Hello. Please, don't forget to migrate Kitalpha, 3p too. Thanks. Benoit
Comment 8 Benoit Langlois CLA 2019-12-10 04:39:38 EST
Actually, we would like to have a dedicated Forum for PolarSys, like Modeling.
And in this forum, we like to have the same organization than today [1], for Capella (with General Information, Arcadia, Capella Workbench... inside), Kitalpha, and 3p.

Done.

Thank you for the structure. For the concerned projects, will you populate the (Eclipse) PolarSys forum from the messages in the forum of the PolarSys infrastructure?

There isn't a way to move messages between instances, so that's why we're leaving the old instance online for a few months before shutting it down.

If you'd prefer to just make the transition now I can redirect all Polarsys forums traffic to the Eclipse.org forums.

The problem is that we loose all the history for the users, and six months for the old forum seems too short.

The new message ("This service is archived, please use www.eclipse.org/forums") in the header of the old Capella forum on Polarsys refers to a wrong URL (https://polarsys.org/forums/index.php)

It should refer to https://www.eclipse.org/forums/index.php/i/11/
Comment 14 Stephane LACRAMPE CLA 2019-12-12 15:12:03 EST
Now it looks like the polarsys forum is not accessible anymore (I mean the legacy one that has the history of all the messages), whatever I do to access it, I get redirected to the eclipse/org address, is there a way we can still access it as there is a lot of knowledge here?

Hi,
Your proposition was to let the previous forum in a read-only mode. But currently, it is no more accessible, despite it has a great value for the Capella community.
Is there a plan to make it accessible again ?

Sorry this was the fault of an overly broad re-write rule. I've tweaked the rule and the forums are now visible again.

Comment 17 Stephane LACRAMPE CLA 2020-01-19 00:59:49 EST
Could it be possible that the top banner on the old forum (https://polarsys.org/forums/index.php/i/4/) point to the right new forum url: https://www.eclipse.org/forums/index.php/i/11/ ?

Thanks a lot
Stephane

Comment 19 Stephane LACRAMPE CLA 2020-01-22 15:59:24 EST
Thanks, would it be possible that the actual text also displays the right url?
Comment 20 Stephane LACRAMPE CLA 2020-04-09 12:42:21 EDT
It seems the old forum is no more available right now (504 error). Would it be possible to keep it up and running a little bit longer, please?

The old server has been shutdown and the custom pass through for the old forums has been retired.

As such I'm going to close this as 'resolved, wontfix'.
