Character that is not italic

When syntax coloring uses an italic font style, newly typed characters are rendered in normal style. Only when typing the next character will the previous character become italic.

The issue occurs on 4.8, but I cannot reproduce it with today's I-build. 

Version: 4.9
Build id: I20180712-2000
OS: Linux, v.4.17.3-200.fc28.x86_64, x86_64 / gtk 3.22.30

Emond, can you try with a 4.9 I-build?

I can confirm that a 4.9 build does not have the same issue.

The "h" in the screenshot is also black, not blue. I think this is a duplicate of bug 536234.

Looking at bug 536234, I think you are right, which also explains why it does not occur on 4.9.
