Window->Preferences-Workbench-Appearance
Click on 'Restore Defaults'
Note that the background colors in the Workbench Color Theme section are all 
set to black.
I clicked 'Cancel' so I don't know if it actually sets everything to black... 
but black is not the default.

As an aside, note that the title for this section 'Workbench Color Theme' is 
in mixed case, whereas the paradigm in general for this type of title is to 
capitalize only the first word. (i.e. should be 'Workbench color theme', for 
consistency)
