Now that 3.0 has a command to open external files, this should be bound by default to Ctrl-O in all views and editors. Java's outline command would have to change, but Ctrl-O means open in many other applications. This is for standard mode, not emacs mode of course.
Look at Bug 37934. In the next integration build (I20031302), you should be able to try out the new key binding configuration. Feedback is always welcome.
This has been changed in the new key configuration. It is available in today's integration build (I20031202). It is called "Standard (3.0) - NEW!".
Douglas Pollock wrote 16feb2004 on eclipse-dev: "The new key binding set is being pulled from 3.0 due to time constraints. While it appeared in M7, it is likely to disappear in the first integration build afterward (i.e., tomorrow)." Given this I'd like control-O to be reconsidered for the standard keydefs.
Please pass this bug back after you have opened up "Ctrl+O" for use by the platform.
There are no plans to bind "Open External File..." and to give up Ctrl+O. If you need this command frequently you can define (and decommit for Quick Outline) Ctrl + O yourself via Keys preference page.
Please reconsider this one as a general usability issue whether or not the Java editor has its own binding for Ctrl-O. For example, C developers trying to transition from Visual Studio, TextPad, or other programs have certain expectations about standard key bindings. See these references that all recommend a few standard bindings including Ctrl-O for Open: Java Look and Feel Guidelines from Sun: http://java.sun.com/developer/techDocs/hi/repository/ExpandedShortcuts.html Windows user interface guidelines from Microsoft: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en- us/dnwue/html/appxB.asp Gnome user interface guidelines: http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/1.0/userinput.html#standard- shortcuts
Removing target milestone, no further action for 3.0.
I agree with Ed's note in comment 6. I would like to see Control+O bound by default to "Open External File...". On a related note, I think it should follow "New" in the file menu - see bug 75483.
There are no plans to change this.
