In the EGit compare, the local file is shown on the left, and the index file on the right. That is, from the 'Git Staging' view, double click a file with unstaged changes, and see the 'Compare file.ext Current and Index' editor being shown.

I propose to switch them, so that the index file is shown on the left, and the local file on the right. The index file is the 'old' file, and the local file is the modified/new one. I think the old on the left and new on the right is better, as it allows one to read from left to right. I believe this is also the more traditional ordering.
