The rules and procedure for naming Mars+1 will be similar to what has happened in the past. The name should be alphabetically greater than "M" Preference will be given to "N" names, but no strict rule that others would not be considered. Preference given to names that fit the "moon", "heavenly body gods", or "scientists" themes we've had in the past. This cross-project bugzilla entry will remain open to solicit names, until December 15th to gather suggestions for potential names. The planning council will then meeting and remove any names deemed unsuitable for any reason (as always, the Planning Council has final responsibility for the name). Following the gathering of the list of names in this bugzilla, a community poll will be used to pick top choice. We may have a series of run-off polls, voting until majority achieved. The poll should be opened by in late December or early January with a week of voting allowed. The final decision on the name will be made by Feb 15th at the latest.
I will throw my hat in the ring with: * Nova * Neutrino
I vote "X" since it will be the 10th sim rel. Use N for next year.
(In reply to Chris Aniszczyk from comment #1) Neptune looks like an obvious choice. It's also the planet closest to the color of the Eclipse icon (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/06/Neptune.jpg/240px-Neptune.jpg)
Nemesis
* Neptune (another planet;-) * Newton (one of the most important scientists) * Neumann (also a very important scientist, especially for IT though his full name was Von-Neumann) * Neujmin (Russian astronomer, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grigory_Neujmin a Lunar crater and several comets are named after him)
Nigel
* Nebula * Newton * Nash (mathematician)
(In reply to Sergey Prigogin from comment #3) > (In reply to Chris Aniszczyk from comment #1) > > Neptune looks like an obvious choice. It's also the planet closest to the > color of the Eclipse icon > (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/06/Neptune.jpg/240px- > Neptune.jpg) +1 :)
* Neutron * Neuron

Niobe Neumann
* Neo
(In reply to Sergey Prigogin from comment #3) > Neptune looks like an obvious choice. +1
neutrino may ruffle some feathers with our blackberry friends. Then again, if we're going to get sued for names, let's go big: Newton. I like Nibiru - Nibiru is [Marduk's] star, which he made appear in the heavens... [130-131] The stars of heaven, let him [Nibiru] set their course; let him shepherd all the gods like sheep. [wikipedia] Let's just say the mention in Star Trek, Dr Who and the conspiracy theories associated to that name are just bonuses.
(In reply to Mike Milinkovich from comment #12) > * Neo +1
Let's not forget the most famous planet with letter N +Naboo
Neon
Naboo +1
(In reply to Neil Bartlett from comment #7) > * Nebula +1 for Nebula
* Nabila! (only French people will understand the fun parts behind that name) More seriously: -1 for Nebula as there is already an Eclipse project called Nebula, so that may introduce some confusion +1 for Neptune as it's the first one to come to the mind of many people when you ask "tell me something that starts by N and that is after Mars"
+1 for Neptune
+1 Naboo
+1 for Nova
+1 Neptune
(In reply to Mickael Istria from comment #21) > * Nabila! (only French people will understand the fun parts behind that name) Please, it's not a good idea :) I think "Neptune" is a good choice. My other choice is "Nova"
(In reply to Mike Milinkovich from comment #12) > * Neo +1 for Neo (sounds good but I'm not sure if it fits exactly into the themes of heavenly body names or scientist names)
On the contrary, it also stands for "Near Earth Object";-D See http://creation.com/noahs-comet "Noah" would also start with N, but see sites as the one mentioned, it likely sounds too Religious, especially in non-Christian societies this would sound offensive ;-)
(In reply to Neil Bartlett from comment #7) > * Nebula > * Newton > * Nash (mathematician) Isn't Nebula an active project, so that probably won't work. +1 for Newton, I already suggested his name;-)
(In reply to Ralf Andresen from comment #19) > Naboo +1 I am not the IP and Legal expert here, but it might cause some difficulties with the Disney Star Wars franchise;-)
* Nemo * Nautilus Not the Disney movie character, but Captain Nemo from the book. Plus his vessel, Nautilus. Not only were Jules Verne and his stories usually before their time, they predicted many things that would later become reality and usually based on science. There's also a private spacecraft "Nautilus" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BA_330) so "heavenly object" would work, too;-)
can we please assign this bug to someone else than cross-project so we don't get an email for each suggestion unless we are on the CC list for this bug ?
I'll take it
+1 for Neptune.
Nebuchadnezzar
+1 For Neptune (perhaps we can at least temporarily show a splash that uses a Neptune image...;-). I also like 'Nova'...
* Nano
Nostromo (ship in movie Alien; also book by Joseph Conrad)
+1 for Neptune Also like Nostromo (or Nostrilomo, for the Red Dwarf fans out there), and the idea of doing an "Eclipse X".
Eclipse NorthStar : according to wikipedia the term pole star usually refers to Polaris, which is the current northern pole star, also known as the North Star http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pole_star or ... more ambitious : Eclipse Nyancat (http://i57.tinypic.com/2w7nyx0.png)
If we're going for "heavenly body gods" how about: * Nyarlathotep
+1 for Neo
"Quasars" are among the brightest, oldest, most distant, and most powerful objects in the universe.
1. Narvi(saturnian system)- Named for a norse giant, discovered by S.S. Sheppard, D.C. Jewitt, and J. Kleyna 2. Neso(Neptunian system)- One of the Nereids, the fifty daughters of Nereus and Doris. Discovered by M. Holman, J. Kavelaars, T. Grav, W. Fraser, and D. Milisavljevic
1. Narvi(saturnian system) 2. Neso(Neptunian system)
Netum = sanskrit word to lead. Nacao = sanskrit word to dance.
+1 for Neptune -1 for Nautilus (= name of the Gnome file manager) -1 for Nano - there is nothing small about Eclipse anymore :-) -1 for Neo - there is not much new I do like Nigel (as in Sheldon - http://peterfhamilton.wikia.com/wiki/Nigel_Sheldon) but I don't think fantasy scientists are part of the "scientists" group Chris was talking about). Before I'd dare to call it Newton, I'd like to see all the SWT issues on GTK/KDE fixed, first. He might pay us a visit for (ab)using his name, otherwise.
+1 Neo, nice suggestion Mike. -1 Neptune, although I know negative votes aren't counted and this already looks likely to be the winner. It's just so predictable and boring.
Oort. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Oort, a dutch astronomer, but what is more important, there is such a thing as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oort_cloud, which could be a nice connection to all the 'cloud' initiatives that are taking place in the community (Flux, IoT, Orion).
naevus
* Eclipse Next
(In reply to Marc Teufel from comment #54) > * Eclipse Next Did you really mean Eclipse Necrosis? :-) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necrosis)
(In reply to Sergey Prigogin from comment #55) > (In reply to Marc Teufel from comment #54) > > * Eclipse Next > > Did you really mean Eclipse Necrosis? :-) > > (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necrosis) He he. But no, I mean "Next" in the meaning of the english word next. Nothing special, very simple and easy to remember. Saying the message "Eclipse, the next version". Sometimes it can be that simple. ;-)
+1 Neptune (I thought this would be obvious, too)
+1 Neo +1 Nova +1 neXt (X stands for the 10th sim. release) * Ninja
I would like to suggest "Neomenia" this means "The period of the new moon" or "a heathen festival at the time of the new moon"
Neptune +1 Newton +1
Nauplius
(In reply to Sergey Prigogin from comment #3) > (In reply to Chris Aniszczyk from comment #1) > > Neptune looks like an obvious choice. It's also the planet closest to the > color of the Eclipse icon > (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/06/Neptune.jpg/240px- > Neptune.jpg) +1
Naiad - a moon of Neptune (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naiad_%28moon%29)
The poll is open now: https://www.eclipse.org/mars/planning/poll.php Thank you to everyone for their suggestions. As a limit, I chose 10 suggestions to put in the poll based on voting in the comments and potential for trademark conflict. Please cast your votes now, the poll will be open for ten days, until December 19th.
I like both Neptune and Nova, but ... weird as it may sound, if I am going to be typing the name few hundred times, it's got to be easy to type! So, I prefer Nova :)
(In reply to Jayaprakash Arthanareeswaran from comment #65) > I like both Neptune and Nova, but ... > weird as it may sound, if I am going to be typing the name few hundred > times, it's got to be easy to type! So, I prefer Nova :) +1 for Nova

I suggest "Nisha" which in Sanskrit means night. Yes, it's not a a celestial body per se, but to be fair most of the space we know is night-like always.
Hello community, the Planning Council is reaching out for more naming suggestions after we ran into legal conflicts with the top names from the original vote. We'd prefer to work with community input again to make a decision due to the names eliminated due to potential trademark issues: Neptune: 38% Nova: 25% Newton: 11% Neo: 8% Naboo: 8% We are now seeking new suggestions until EOD Monday at the start of EclipseCon 2015. At EclipseCon, we will also launch a new poll on Tuesday the 17th, which will run until the end of the conference. The poll results will be used again by the Planning Council to move forward with a name. You're also free to swing by the Eclipse Foundation booth to reach out to the EMO if you have some naming suggestions. I'll put forward a new suggestion of Nyx (or Nix): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyx Thanks again!
(In reply to Chris Aniszczyk from comment #70) > At EclipseCon, we will also launch a new poll on Tuesday the 17th, which > will run until the end of the conference. I believe you mean "At EclipseCon, we will also launch a new poll on Tuesday the 10th" not the 17th
So all 5 (even Neptune) carry the risk of trademarks? I would have thought at least for Naboo (Disney) and likely Apple still has a trademark for its failed Newton device, too;-) Nova seems to be a car brand although from the 60s... Keep in mind, "Nix" means "Nothing" in large parts of Germany and all of Austria at least Southern dialects. Not sure, if that would be a good PR statement considering the huge number of German speakers in the Eclipse community (judging from all the DemoCamps there;-) Guess the "Nyx" variant might be reasonable, though it still sounds the same if spoken. Werner
Yes it will be the 10th, not the 17th, sorry!
Given "Nyx" after all means "Mermaid" as long as there isn't another Disney movie trademark, it sounds fair. Plus images like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyx#mediaviewer/File:William-Adolphe_Bouguereau_(1825-1905)_-_La_Nuit_(1883).jpg offer some creative freedom towards advertising the release train ;-D
Oort - type of comet named after Dutch astronomer Jan Oort Orpheus - from mythology but also alternate name for planet Theia theorized to have smashed into Earth to form the Moon
Namaste
I'll formally put forward "N!" (pronounced either as just plain "N" or "N-bang") [1] [1] https://waynebeaton.wordpress.com/2015/02/25/eclipse-n/
Nandni, a Hindu goddess. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nandni_Mata
> I'll put forward a new suggestion of Nyx (or Nix): > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyx > -1 for Nix/Nyx Nix is a Unix package management system, and NixOS is a Linux distribution based on it. See http://nixos.org/ This name is therefore confusing as there is a real possibility that a developer might have to install Eclipse Nix on NixOS using Nix.
Nucleus Nuclear Plus I liked Nebula and Neutron from the previous postings, never heard why they were rejected.
(In reply to Pat Huff from comment #81) > Nucleus I don't think this would pass the trademark review, this is the name of an embedded operating system http://www.mentor.com/embedded-software/nucleus/ > Plus I liked Nebula and Neutron from the previous postings, never heard why > they were rejected. Nebula is an existing Eclipse project http://eclipse.org/nebula Not sure about Neutron.
What about "Number X"?
Neutrino
I will go with "Neon" again. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neon
Nirvana http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nirvana The origin of the word Nirvana relates to religious enlightenment. Achieving Nirvana is to make feelings like suffering and desire disappear. It is also used to casually talk about "happiness". Some example usages of Nirvana http://fraze.it/n_search.jsp?q=nirvana&l=0&sugg=off Eclipse Nirvana :)
I suggest Neumond. This means new moon in german. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_moon https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neumond
(In reply to David Carver from comment #84) > Neutrino -1. The name of the QNX operating system is Neutrino. Momentics for Neutrino is based on Eclipse Neutrino. Rule #1 of trademark is to avoid confusion.
- North - Night - Nomad
Eclipse NaN (Not a number)
@Marc-Andre Laperle, I like your proposal. Eclipse NaN it's a free software... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_Six_%28The_Prisoner%29#I_am_not_a_number.2C_I_am_a_free_man
+1 to each of the proposals in comment 89. Though north might be tricky because "Eclipse North" sounds like the name of a conference. Also, these: * Nuage (play on words, french it means cloud, english it can be said "new age"). * Névé, wikipedia says: "a young, granular type of snow which has been partially melted, refrozen and compacted, yet precedes the form of ice" * Navel
* Neuron. * Nice. Because Eclipse is so nice! "Eclipse Nice"... has a ring to it. * Narwhal. It's a cross between a whale and a *%&$ing unicorn! What's not to like?? * Nimoy. LLAP.
(In reply to Jonathan Koscielny from comment #83) > What about "Number X"? Then why not "Number 6" like in "The Prisoner"?. Besides, the whole "X" seems a bit overused by Apple, even if they may not have a trademark on that.
(In reply to Neil Bartlett from comment #93) > * Neuron. > > * Nice. Because Eclipse is so nice! "Eclipse Nice"... has a ring to it. > > * Narwhal. It's a cross between a whale and a *%&$ing unicorn! What's not to > like?? > > * Nimoy. LLAP. If there isn't any (celebrity name trade) conflict, Nimoy would be a noble gesture so briefly after his death.
(In reply to Steve Francisco from comment #76) > Oort - type of comet named after Dutch astronomer Jan Oort > Orpheus - from mythology but also alternate name for planet Theia theorized > to have smashed into Earth to form the Moon Do you suggest to skip "N" after all now? Otherwise, "O" would not be relevant till next year;-)
(In reply to Vikas Chandra from comment #85) > I will go with "Neon" again. > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neon It may not go well with the new "Black" theme, but as a variation to "Neo", why not consider "Neon"?
(In reply to Werner Keil from comment #94) > (In reply to Jonathan Koscielny from comment #83) > > What about "Number X"? "Number 2015" or "Number 15" might be a good option to consider for those who have been thinking that it's time to switch over to numbers. (In reply to Werner Keil from comment #95) > > * Nimoy. LLAP. > > If there isn't any (celebrity name trade) conflict, Nimoy would be a noble > gesture so briefly after his death. Already rejected. There are rules about capitalizing on the death of a celebrity. While I fully agree that it would entirely intended as a show of respect, it's a no go. (In reply to Werner Keil from comment #96) > Do you suggest to skip "N" after all now? Otherwise, "O" would not be > relevant till next year;-) The Planning Council suggested that we might consider just skipping N and going to O. That's why you're seeing these suggestions.
Btw, this whole legal thing... can we all just agree that every word and name ever has been assigned to a software product or name of a company at some point? Should we be coming up with many word names, like they do with band names, like Nexus Norton, or Newton Nasty? Also, Neil's got me convinced. +1 for Narwhal!
(In reply to Wayne Beaton from comment #99) > (In reply to Werner Keil from comment #94) > > (In reply to Jonathan Koscielny from comment #83) > > > What about "Number X"? > > "Number 2015" or "Number 15" might be a good option to consider for those > who have been thinking that it's time to switch over to numbers. > > (In reply to Werner Keil from comment #95) > > > * Nimoy. IC, still another N suggestion: "Noir" First of all because of the new dark theme. And with a little imagination there's also a thing or phenomen in the universe, the French word for "black hole" is "trou noir". just skipping the first part.
Not only since Breaking Bad the element table could be another inspiration. - Neon was mentioned before - Nickel - Natrium - Nobelium There are at least 2 others, but they re-assemble either Neon or the discarded Neptun, so I don't know if the element "Neptunium" would be less harmed by legal concerns or issues?
*Nuclide *Nocturnal *Nexus *Novelty *Nutrient
- Neodymium, or just Nd I like other chemical element names like Neon, Nickel, Natrium, or even Nitrogen (could just call it Eclipse N).
(In reply to Chris Aniszczyk from comment #70) > We'd prefer to work with community input again to make a > decision due to the names eliminated due to potential trademark issues: > > Neptune: 38% Seriously, "Neptune" is encumbered by trademark issues? It's the name of a planet, for heaven's sake! Who on earth claims to have ownership of this name?
(In reply to Doug Schaefer from comment #88) > (In reply to David Carver from comment #84) > > Neutrino > > -1. The name of the QNX operating system is Neutrino. Momentics for Neutrino > is based on Eclipse Neutrino. Rule #1 of trademark is to avoid confusion. Well, shows it was a good name. :)
(In reply to Werner Keil from comment #97) > Do you suggest to skip "N" after all now? Otherwise, "O" would not be > relevant till next year;-) Well, if N names are carrying a curse of bad luck, why not? After all the rule from comment #1 was: > The name should be alphabetically greater than "M". Preference will be given > to "N" names, but no strict rule that others would not be considered.
(In reply to Dinesh Mike from comment #47) +1 for Narvi and Neso (in that order)
To avoid even a remote possibility of colliding with a trademark, but to stay true to the astronomy theme: Nereidum Montes - a mountain range on Mars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nereidum_Montes)
+1 for Nimoy
Eclipse NorthPole or North Pole http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Pole Eclipse NeutronStar or Neutron Star http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutron_star
(In reply to Karsten Thoms from comment #110) > +1 for Nimoy Didn't you see Wayne said it would be unethical and therefore it would not be acceptable?;-)
(In reply to Peter Nehrer from comment #104) > - Neodymium, or just Nd > > I like other chemical element names like Neon, Nickel, Natrium, or even > Nitrogen (could just call it Eclipse N). Or Eclipse NT Wait, we had that already;-D
(In reply to Sergey Prigogin from comment #109) > To avoid even a remote possibility of colliding with a trademark, but to > stay true to the astronomy theme: > > Nereidum Montes - a mountain range on Mars > (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nereidum_Montes) Skip the Montes, otherwise it might work.
Another one related to geography and especially Canada: - Niagara (of course I hope nobody put a trademark on that as well? ;-O )
(In reply to Ralf Andresen from comment #116) > +1 for Nimoy Guys you're wasting time, see above > Already rejected. There are rules about capitalizing on the death of a > celebrity. While I fully agree that it would entirely intended as a show of > respect, it's a no go.
(In reply to Marc Khouzam from comment #89) > - North > - Night > - Nomad +1 for Nomad It highlights the mobile culture and indirectly points out the importance of IoT. Many "Things" are also constantly on the run, like Nomads ;-)
Nadir: the point on the celestial sphere directly below an observer. Eclipse is a framework, It is directly under our plug-ins. Also +1 for Nimoy in an easter egg.
(In reply to Matthew Khouzam from comment #119) > Nadir: the point on the celestial sphere directly below an observer. > > Eclipse is a framework, It is directly under our plug-ins. > > Also +1 for Nimoy in an easter egg. Guess developers on top of Eclipse may put such easter eggs into their products or tools (Notepad++ just released a special "Je Suis Charlie" edition) but I doubt Eclipse Foundation as a whole might do even that;-)
Re Nadir, I was thinking of that too till I also found these definitions: the lowest point; point of greatest adversity or despair. the lowest or deepest point; depths: the nadir of despair
@Pat Huff Many words have several contradictory meanings ter·rif·ic təˈrifik/ adjective adjective: terrific 1. of great size, amount, or intensity. 2. archaic causing terror. Origin mid 17th century (sense 2): from Latin terrificus, from terrere ‘frighten.’ I do get though how we don't want to say eclipse hit a low point.
+1 for Nirvana
Namo - means salute to God Nandini - Hindu Goddess
+1 for Neon and Nandini
(In reply to Krishna Murthy Mirajkar from comment #124) > Namo - means salute to God > Nandini - Hindu Goddess -1 for Namo Something that's too religiously bound may not seem appropriate. For a similar reason the otherwise matching "Noah" also did not seem to be on a shortlist. While it's the name of a goddess Nandini might work.
OK, here's another one (since goddesses or other "divine creatures" were suggested before) - Nofretete or its Egyptian versions - Nefertiti - Nefertari (another variation of the same name)
Maybe one more candidate: * Noon (sun is at its highest elevation in the sky) +1 for the in comment#47 proposed moon names Neso & Narvi (with slight favor for Narvi)
Since a very famous scientist with N (Newton) didn't work out, maybe not just our Norwegian friends know - Nansen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fridtjof_Nansen famous explorer and Nobel Prize winner)
The Eclipse Planning Council has decided to run another poll for community feedback about a name for the Mars+1 release: https://www.eclipse.org/mars/planning/poll2.php Here are the new names we're considering: N Namaste Nandini Narwhal Narvi Neon Neumond Nickel Nirvana Noir Nomad Number 2015 Please vote! https://www.eclipse.org/mars/planning/poll2.php
Seriously, just "N"? Ok, at least temporarily, Android 5 was also nicknamed "Android L".
what happened to the obvious choices in the planning council? Neptune Newton Neumann Nova
(In reply to Michael Scharf from comment #132) > what happened to the obvious choices in the planning council? > > Neptune > Newton > Neumann > Nova See comment 70. (I still can't believe "Neptune" is trademark-encumbered, and I'd be curious to know by whom.)
+1 for neon
I know I'm too late to suggest new names... but my daughter helped me come up with this: Nerio - "Nerio was an ancient war goddess and the personification of valor. She was the partner of MARS in ancient cult practices"
Cute, the only issue (aside from having missed the Doodle short-list) I could see, is it sounds almost exactly like "Nero", a tyrant and mass-murderer. (not to mention a Klingon with the same name destroyed Spock's planet in the "Star Trek" movie;-)
After a second round of voting and EMO approval, "Eclipse Neon" will be the name of the 2016 simultaneous release. https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=456732#c6 Thanks everyone for voting again and your patience.
-1 for Neon Already a product based on Eclipse called NeOn http://neon-toolkit.org/
(In reply to Chris Fairhall from comment #138) > -1 for Neon > Already a product based on Eclipse called NeOn > http://neon-toolkit.org/ Last released in 2011?;-)
(In reply to Werner Keil from comment #141) > Last released in 2011?;-) First hit on Google for "Eclipse Neon". Funded by EU grants and backed by commercial and academic partners. Sounds like an IP/Trademark/etc issue to me. All other google hits are neon lights for Mitsubishi Eclipse's
We knew about that project when we accepted the name. It is an expired research project that has had no life for 4 years. We have no concerns at this time about any confusion in the marketplace.
Neon strikes me as a bit too inert, do we want to be associated with a product that doesn't react much? I guess it might make us seem noble.
(In reply to Matthew Khouzam from comment #144) > Neon strikes me as a bit too inert, do we want to be associated with a > product that doesn't react much? I guess it might make us seem noble. You're a gas!
