After being forced to reset my perspective (bug 431893) I'm no longer able to create my preferred layout of the debug perspective, where the variables view takes the full window height at the right hand side, with debug view and editors vertically sharing the remainder: +-----+--+ | | | +-----+ | | | | +-----+--+ While it's quite tricky to find a place where during dragging the wire-frame would indicate the desired placement, when I release the mouse button in this situation I only get one of these two effects: - either the view takes only part of the vertical space (although the wire frame showed differently) - or the wire frames just stay and the view is no longer shown. In the second case, wire frames are glued to the glass, i.e., they don't even move when I move the Eclipse window, until the next time I drag some view around. This is when using GTK2 and the Classic theme.
OK, after playing 15 puzzle for a while I can move the parts around to finally achieve the desired layout. But directly placing a view into the full-hight right hand side position doesn't seem to be possible any more in build I20140401-0800
Same thing happened to me on Windows 8. When trying to drag Breakpoints to fill 33% of the window on the right-hand side the view became unhinged and stuck in place, eventually ending behind other views and only showing thru the gaps between them. I seem to remember some other bug about this as well where they were coming at it from programmatic starting point with the UI problem only theoretical at the beginning. I can't think of how to find that bug right now, though.
I've just tried this on RC3 with both the Java and Debug perspectives and didn't have any problems. If you don't have any views to the right of the editor area to start with (e.g. you've closed the Outline view in the Debug perspective) you may run into some problems since we also allow dragging to the 'edge' of the stared editor area as well. We do need to sort this out though....

That very much sounds like my situation - I always have the Outline view minimized in the debug perspective (we have Ctrl-O, right? :) ). Having the variables view share into the editor area was one of the observed effects. Trying it for a few seconds right now I couldn't reproduce my problem, but too little testing to claim this problem resolved.
Moving to 4.6, please move back to 4.5.1 if you think these bugs are important enough to be addressed in the service release.
Running 4.5RC2 on gtk 2.24.23 I can no longer reproduced (and I haven't seen it in a while now). @Timo, have you seen it lately?
No, and after a quick test in Eclipse IDE for Java Developers Version: Mars Release Candidate 1 (4.5.0RC1) Build id: 20150521-1252 it seems to be working.
Mass move to 4.7 as M7 is approaching. Please move back in case you are planning to fix it for Neon.
This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet. As such, we're closing this bug. If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it and reopen this bug. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant. -- The automated Eclipse Genie.
