On the Eclipse download page [1] we are giving the users a hint about the Java runtime environment that they should be using:

Hint:

You will need a Java runtime environment (JRE) to use Eclipse (Java SE 6 or greater is recommended). All downloads are provided under the terms and conditions of the Eclipse Foundation Software User Agreement unless otherwise specified.

Depending on the outcome of bug 423734 we need to update this hint, either with 'some packages require at least JRE 1.7', or 'it is suggested to use at least JRE 1.7 but certain package may run with a lower version', ...

My patch was merged. I only updated java 6 to java 7.
