I think UI was correct component. The code that does this is in EclipseSplashHandler.java (around line 65). Would be best to handle this with "code" (taking font size into account, etc.). If my "analysis" is incorrect, feel free to move back to 'releng'.

Yes, it would be best to fix in code. I was about doing that, but: other products with completely different splash screen might rely on the current defaults that we use in EclipseSplashHandler :-(. I've added a comment to the class. Fixed with http://git.eclipse.org/c/platform/eclipse.platform.git/commit/?id=8e350205195d221d49cba5bca98e45c34b02c54f (also adjusts to fg color to match the one used for the "LUNA" string.
Verified in N20140224-2104.
