Description Steffen Pingel CLA 2013-07-10 16:09:58 EDT
As documented at http://wiki.eclipse.org/Mylyn_Integrator_Reference#Deciding_on_a_version the upcoming Mylyn 3.10 release will support Eclipse 4.2 and later. Support for Eclipse 3.8 will be discontinued. Please comment here if you have any concerns.
Comment 1 Sam Davis CLA 2013-07-10 22:49:53 EDT
I have concerns. I don't use 4.x and know very few people who do, and I have no intention of switching any time soon. I think we should continue to support 3.8.
Comment 2 Steffen Pingel CLA 2013-07-11 04:54:35 EDT
To put this into context: The intention is not to break backwards compatibility with older Eclipse releases (Mylyn is still tested against Eclipse 3.5). The interpretation of the policy has been that bugs related to newer Eclipse releases are prioritized over older streams which are no longer supported through open source channels.

Let's discuss during the next call if it makes sense to continue to advertise 3.8 support since you make a good point that it's likely still a very popular platform stream. We could drop 4.2 support instead so we would end up with 3.8, 4.3 and 4.4 support.
Comment 3 Sam Davis CLA 2013-07-11 12:28:43 EDT
That proposal makes much more sense to me.
Comment 4 Steffen Pingel CLA 2013-07-11 13:01:53 EDT
Let's gather some more feedback and update the policy accordingly (i.e. support the latest 3.x release + the latest two 4.x releases/milestones).
Comment 5 Sam Davis CLA 2013-07-12 17:30:57 EDT
If that ends up being our policy, since 4.4 is not to be released for another year, shouldn't we still support 4.2?
Comment 6 Sam Davis CLA 2013-07-12 17:32:09 EDT
Or is latest two releases defined to be the most recent and the upcoming?
Comment 7 Steffen Pingel CLA 2013-07-12 17:43:20 EDT
Yes, it the latest two stable + the current milestone (see wiki page).
Comment 8 Sam Davis CLA 2013-07-12 19:56:45 EDT
What are the latest two stable? 4.3 and 4.2?
Comment 9 Steffen Pingel CLA 2013-07-13 04:26:12 EDT
4.3 and 3.8 would be the latest two stable streams in that case and 4.4 would be the milestone stream.
Comment 10 Steffen Pingel CLA 2013-07-13 04:26:41 EDT
Under the current policy 4.3. and 4.2 would become the stable stream though.
Comment 11 Sam Davis CLA 2013-08-15 12:41:05 EDT
We discussed this in the latest Mylyn call and agreed that supporting 3.8, 4.3 and 4.4 makes sense for now. I suggest we update the page linked above to read:

The general policy for Mylyn is that the current 4.x major release, the latest 3.x major release or milestone, and the latest 4.x milestone of Eclipse are supported. For example, on the Eclipse 4.4M1 release date, August 23, 2013, Mylyn will support Eclipse 4.4M1 (latest milestone), 4.3 (current 4.x release) and 3.8 (current 3.x release/milestone).

Is there anything else left to do here?
Comment 12 Steffen Pingel CLA 2013-08-15 13:43:06 EDT
That sounds great. The only thing that needs to happen is the wiki update (project plan should already be updated).
Comment 13 Sam Davis CLA 2013-08-15 17:09:27 EDT
Done.
