This issue has to do with the same problem as #408505 . The patch proposed in the #408505 ( http://fedorapeople.org/cgit/aspektor/public_git/eclipse.platform.swt.git/commit/?h=widget_show_2 ) resolves this issue as well.

Silenio, any thoughts on Anatoly's patch. Even if not perfect I would like to push a modified one that does the show/hide dance only for GTK 3 as this is causing too much problems.

I have tested this patch on Fedora 19 and it does fix this bug as well as bug 408505. The patch looks good to me but I have not tested on other versions of GTK 3. 

Anatoly & Alex, did you happen to test on other GTK versions just to confirm it doesn't break anything else? I'll try to test and update soon.

I tested the patch on Ubuntu 12.04 with GTK 3.4.2 and also with GTK 2.24.10 and it seems to be working fine.

In this case if noone objects, I'll push it tomorrow to master.
It would be very good to backport to 4_3 too.
