Description Lars Vogel CLA 2013-02-14 01:28:40 EST
Is it possible to remove the copyright note from the Eclipse IDE splashscreen? I think the splashscreen would look much nicer with it.
Comment 1 Holger Voormann CLA 2013-02-14 02:32:03 EST
What about splash screen copy right notes of RCP applications? I assume that if the copyright note is required for the Eclipse IDE then a (maybe extended) copyright note will also be required for Eclipse-based applications.
Comment 2 Lars Vogel CLA 2013-02-14 02:49:36 EST
with -> without -> I think the splashscreen would look much nicer without it.

@Holger: In an RCP app you define your own splashscreen hence the customer can decided what he can use.
Comment 3 David Williams CLA 2013-02-16 13:15:23 EST
I believe "platform ui" is normally in charge of the splash screen, so moving there. I'm sure some legal person should be consulted if its a "legal requirement" or merely a "legal nicety". I suspect the latter (but, I'm no lawyer).
Comment 4 John Arthorne CLA 2013-02-18 09:47:57 EST
The copyright isn't particularly valuable ("Copyright Eclipse contributors" is nearly free of any legal value). However the Java trademark attribution is important. It could be somewhere else like the About dialog, but I thought using the splash screen for this was fairly common.
Comment 5 Lars Vogel CLA 2013-02-18 09:53:58 EST
I would prefer it in the about dialog. Putting a copyright into everybody face at every startup time does not feel good for an Open Source project.

Compared with LibreOffice -> No copyright in the splash
Compared with Gimp -> No copyright in the splash

Adding Eclipse legal contact for comment.

There is no requirement that the copyright notice be handled the way it currently is.

Dealing with the Java trademark attribution in the About as suggested would be fine. Attributions with respect to Oracle's trademarks should be done consistent with Oracle's Trademark Guidelines - http://www.oracle.com/us/legal/third-party-trademarks/index.html#trademark.

Thanks Janet for the clarification.

Is that something we can for Eclipse 4.4?

I think Ian Skerett is on his way to create a new Eclipse logo. I assume if we have a new Eclipse logo, we can use this to get rid of the copyright note on the splash screen.

Yes we will try to make this happen. We need to make sure the copyright info gets added to the About US dialog.

Just a small reminder... if something changes in this area (About dialog, splash screen, etc.) it is always good to add me as CC: to the bug. Otherwise it is very likely that it won't be updated in time in the EPP packages.

Can you post the copyright text into this bug? It is difficult to write in down from the splashscreen. I add it to the Eclipse SDK About dialog and open a new bug for EPP.

Ian opened bug 427514 for adding the text to the About dialog, and David already wrote down the text from the splash in his first comment in bug 427514#c1

Marking as dup. See also Bug 426260 for related work.
