sample HTML file that demonstrates the problem

formatting the attached sample HTML file produces strange artifacts like "_$ta" inside the file and therefore doesn't only format, but also damages the file.

This has been reported by a user of the Spring Tool Suite (see http://forum.springsource.org/showthread.php?129543-STS-3-0-0-Format-Bug).
