I attempted to push on a branch that had incoming commits. This correctly failed, but there was absolutely no notification that I could see. If I click on the "three dots" logo on the right hand side I can find the reason hidden away in a drop-down menu. This has to be more visible.

This is really a concrete instance of bug 370782, which has blossomed into a more general bug, bug 371261.  Marking this as dependent on the general solution.
