Description Andrea Ross CLA 2012-02-06 15:40:40 EST
This ticket is for tracking discussion and work related to hardware for hosting Long Term Support (LTS) services.
Comment 1 Andrea Ross CLA 2012-02-10 14:27:28 EST
Denis and I talked about hardware this afternoon. We agreed that we'll need to start with 2 servers for minimal redundancy. In time, it's likely that each service will migrate off to its own server(s).
Comment 2 Andrea Ross CLA 2012-02-10 14:29:47 EST
Upping priority to reflect the many tickets that depend on LTS hardware.
Comment 3 Denis Roy CLA 2012-02-27 16:03:05 EST
We've decided a single vserver would be sufficient to start... 4G RAM and about 40 GB disk is probably all I can do for now. I'll check to confirm.
Comment 4 Denis Roy CLA 2012-03-01 14:11:50 EST
I've managed to resuscitate one of our vserver hosts, so I've ordered 24G of RAM. That will increase two servers from 12 to 24G offering us many more slots.
Comment 5 Andrea Ross CLA 2012-03-08 14:13:44 EST
If this host will just be running the LTS VM machine for now, please go ahead and start it up. We can take it down when the new memory arrives without trouble. Thanks!
Comment 6 Denis Roy CLA 2012-03-09 11:10:27 EST
I've got the VM set up ... is there any software you're expecting to see?
Comment 7 Andrea Ross CLA 2012-03-09 11:48:41 EST
We'll take it with just the OS and add the rest from there. I'm guessing SLES?
Comment 8 Denis Roy CLA 2012-03-09 14:00:30 EST
Yes, SLES 11 SP1. I assume you're expecting root access? If so, can you please email me your public key?
Comment 9 Andrea Ross CLA 2012-03-09 14:25:52 EST
It may be easier for Thanh & I to have root while setting things up. This would likely be less onerous on yourself and Matt. We'll keep good notes so we can re-do things once we've got actual hardware later on and decide if we need elevated access then.
Comment 10 Denis Roy CLA 2012-03-09 14:36:40 EST
lts.eclipse.org is yours. There are no ports opened to it from the outside world, so you'll need to bounce off build.eclipse.org for SSH (or SSH from within our office).
Comment 11 Denis Roy CLA 2012-07-04 10:33:13 EDT
Here's a similar vserver host, like we use for eclipse.org. It has more RAM, more CPU cores and much more disk space than the donated eclipse.org counterparts.

This will allow us to host multiple Hudson instances, as well as Windows slaves. We could add a second, third ... and load-balance them.

Matt, I'm getting ready to ask for budget to acquire the vserver host spec'd in the previous comment. It is similar in spec to the 6 mirages we use for eclipse.org, but for LTS. Do you see anything wrong with this?
Comment 13 Eclipse Webmaster CLA 2012-07-04 13:59:47 EDT
It's got RAM,HD,Nics,DVD, and 12 cores, looks fine to me.

Are we considering using the disks 'as is' or in some kind of (software)RAID config?

-M.
Comment 14 Denis Roy CLA 2012-07-04 14:22:10 EDT
Probably in some kind of software raid. I figure md isn't any more complex than the Megaraid cli tools ;)
Comment 15 Denis Roy CLA 2012-07-09 11:06:33 EDT
This is ordered. I've taken the liberty of bumping up RAM to 128G. It wasn't too expensive, and RAM is always in short supply on hosts.

Should be in in a couple of weeks.
Comment 16 Denis Roy CLA 2012-12-11 13:19:45 EST
LTS hardware is fully provisioned. The lts.eclipse.org vserver has moved to its new host, RAM increased to 24G, CPUs increased to 8, and all the data has been migrated to the 2.5TB storage device.
Comment 17 Denis Roy CLA 2014-05-27 09:02:09 EDT
Moving to the Working Groups section.
