a workaround is submitted, but the exception handling should be cleaned up there.

The latest patch set on https://git.eclipse.org/r/#/c/4995/3 proposes an API breaking change to MergeResult. Haven't received any feedback on that change yet, so I'm not adding bug 351806 as a subtask here.
