In the Java perspective, with no editors open, open any editor. Maximize the editor area. Once the editor is maximized, close the one editor. Note that the edit area stays maximized but in 3.8 it would be restored automatically, which was much better in my opinion. Also note there is a minimize and a restore button available. Use the minimize button. The editor area is gone. I can't see any way to get it back, other than to reset the perspective. Reset the perspective. Note the editor area now only has a restore button, rather than the expected minimize and maximize buttons that it had when I started. Shouldn't I have the option to specify version 4.2 in bugzilla for e4 or should I not be using e4 anymore?

The 4.2 bugs should just go against Platform UI now, https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/enter_bug.cgi?product=Platform&component=UI e4 does still manage incubation tools, so we watch both areas. PW

This has always bothered me and has been fixed. http://git.eclipse.org/c/platform/eclipse.platform.ui.git/commit/?id=63fcc5bfffd85a210ae42d80cf76676d88572129 > Use the minimize button. > The editor area is gone. Verified with I20120123-2200 on Windows 7. Thank you for the bug report, Ed.
Reopening...while 3.8 does this it's actually incorrect behavior. We (the platform) should not be making arbitrary decisions on what the users 'wants' us to do. We should just let the user manipulate the model and react accordingly. Why should the area unmaximize ? The original defect stated that you needed to see the views in order to select another file to edit but all the views are still available when the EA is maximized. This is relatively lo-pri so we have time to discuss this, note that the reason I looked was that someone else was surprised by the behavior and asked why it was happening...
It looks to me like this has been fixed. If I only have one editor open, maximize it, then close it, the editor area is restored (unmaximized) in 4.3.
