There are several Eclipse projects which have migrated from PDE Build to Tycho (http://www.eclipse.org/tycho/): - Mylyn (http://tasktop.com/blog/eclipse/experiences-from-migrating-mylyn-to-git-and-tycho) - GEF3D (http://jevopisdeveloperblog.blogspot.com/2011/12/gef3d-goes-git-maventycho-and-hudson.html) - m2e, ZEST, Linux Tools, Jubula, Skalli, ... You might also want to look at http://blog.modeltwozero.com/2011/06/moving-to-tycho-and-teamcity-part-1.html The consensus is that it takes some planning to get the build migrated but after that, a lot of the problems of PDE build are gone forever. The resulting project is easy to build for anyone anywhere (compare that to the current state where it only one person can build it on a single build server). Please consider to migrate the BIRT project to Tycho.
If you don't already know, there is now a new "project" called CBI with the goal to build all of Eclipse with Tycho. See http://wiki.eclipse.org/CBI They already succeeded in compiling most of the platform + JDT: http://wiki.eclipse.org/CBI/Eclipse_Platform_Build It took me about five minutes to start the build using the instructions there and the build completed successfully!
