Description Susan McCourt CLA 2011-12-22 12:04:01 EST
When an operation is happening on a page, there's typically a message that is specific to what's happening in the message area. So that's where my eye goes. Then the progress icon goes gold, and that pulls my eye away. Can we put the icon in a reserved area to the left of the message area since there's already activity happening there?

And I wonder if we should make the icon disappear when there are no tasks running.

Susan, thanks for the comment!
I attached screenshoots how would moving the icon to the left look like with tasks running and without. It's not bat, if you'll confirm that it's better I'll make this change.
I would like to hide the tasks icon when there are no tasks running, and the only thing that is preventing me is that there is no place for the link to the full task list. I really had no idea where to put it and even if there are no tasks running somebody may want to check on the status of some tasks that have been scheduled in the past (for instance he scheduled a task and wants to check if it finished correctly). Maybe you have a hint where to put it?

My first take would be the footer, same as Eclipse. Although in Eclipse the message appears next to the icon, so having them together makes sense to me. The only thing I don't like in the attachment is the clutter of showing an icon when nothing is happening.

I thought that the progress message and icon could be hosted inside the black tool bar and be aligned to the right.

I wonder where the progress icon comes from. It looks like the one from Eclipse Desktop. I think we already have a discussion how to show that something is going on in Orion. My favorite presentation is rotating gears.

I like it better on the left as in the second attachment.

As for where to put the task page link so that a user can find it when not asks are running...what if we stuck it (for now) in the user menu? We are going to have a similar issue with where to put a link to "Preferences" These are "system" things that don't need a primary link in the user's face all the time, but need to be available in an "options" type menu.

I think I would never look in the footer for a link to running tasks (or maybe John was suggesting that all the task info go there).

I think we should stay out of the toolbar for now because we use the right side for pagination actions, etc.

We are going to revisit all of the header layout later in M2 so for now I like the left side where it won't collide with anything.

Sounds fair.

I think if it's just for now we may put it there, but it will really need to be moved when you change layout later in M2, because it doesn't belong there thematically.
With this change I can move the progress icon like on the screenshot and hide it when there are no operations recently running.

I moved the progress icon to the left. I added a link to operations list in the user menu, but when we redesign the top I hope it'll find a better place. The tasks icon shows only where there are some tasks recently run.

yes, that doesn't look right. I guess I was remembering when the user button was a menu with profile choice. I imagined that "operations list" could just be another choice. I did not ever truly realize that the menu went away to be replaced only by the hover?

the beginnings of the new header structure is released now, so I added a "Server Operations" link in the footer. Likewise, the status and progress messages are in the footer now. I removed the link from the user dialog.
