This started to happen last week and is very annoying: I keep getting user/password request dialogs in Thunderbird (8.0) all very often when reading Eclipse news. After entering the information several times, it works for some time but then comes back. Maybe this is connected to the upcoming changes to authentication? I can provide you with the user/password I use, if needed, but you should know it ;-).
Oddly, I also use nntp and haven't seen this. > Maybe this is connected to the upcoming changes to authentication? We're not touching NNTP. > I can provide you with the user/password I use, if needed, but you should know > it ;-). shhhh... :) Could there be a Thunderbird extension interfering with things?
> Could there be a Thunderbird extension interfering with things? Anything is possible, but I didn't change my setup recently. Any idea what I can do to debug it, when it happens again?
Is this still happening? Unfortunately, I can't seem to reproduce it, and I've not heard of any other reports of this behaviour.

I'm also using Thunderbird 9.0.1 on two different machines. One suddenly went into user/password mode about three days ago. The other last night. I've had to disable newsgroup checking, since either I don't know my user/password name, or it's no longer enterable, so I'm now unable to fulfill my committer obligations.

Ed, I managed to figure out what happens. It's essentially a (threading) bug in Thunderbird when accessing the master password store. In previous versions there was a useful add-on (Startup Master) to avoid this, but in the latest version this doesn't work anymore. For me the following fixed the problem: 1. in Thunderbird go to the 'Server Settings' for 'news.eclipse.org' 2. disable 'Check for new messages at startup' 3. enable 'Check for new messages every' 4. delete the user and password from the store (this might not be needed) 5. you might get asked once again for user and password From now on it should work, except that it doesn't fetch the new messages on start-up.
Thanks Step 4 is uncessary Step 5 is required once (when it asks)
