There have been number of questions on the forum that boiled down to users placing spring config into /META-INF/spring for web apps. Spring DM extender picks up those files and tries to create AppContext causing issues. This is kind of documented in Programmer Guide: 6.4 Form Tags Shared Services WAR. It is in a bit of a obscure place. Click on the link and look for Note in "Accessing the Service and Types from the WAR" section. It is one of the things that we will have to move to an FAQ section.
Created attachment 207477 [details] Programmer Guide screen shot
I added a section to the Programmer guide to highlight this issue. See the attached screenshot for a sneak preview. This is covered by documentation commit d810d10ef013db61bcca19b09aec59c0a9b9ed28.
I also added a FAQ: http://wiki.eclipse.org/Virgo/FAQ#Should_I_put_Spring_XML_files_in_META-INF.2Fspring_or_WEB-INF.3F
