It seems that the DawnGMFHandler.modifyingObject also get invoked for model changes that are not relevant for diagram views. This might cause performance problems for projects with huge models as a lot of extra notifications are getting issued.

As discussed in the thread mentioned above, one approach to solve this problem could possibly be to make the DawnGMFHandler and also the DawnDiagramUpdater aware of the org.eclipse.gmf.runtime.emf.type.core.elementTypes and the semantic hints. Another possibility could be to define an Extension Point to let client plugins define relevant NotificationFilters.
