For CVS and SVN our non-committer team members had been able to _easily_ create patches for their changes living in their workspace against HEAD. Since the move of the projects (CDT, TCF) to Git, creating a patch is a headache. As it appears to be, patches can be created only from a commit in the history. (A) non-committer should not require to commit changes locally to their repository clones and (B) even than, the patch contains content that hasn't been selected or is even part of the selected commit. What's needed is: - Create a patch from local workspace changes only (like CVS and SVN offers) - Allow to select the content of the patch by workspace resource (create a patch only for plug-in A while having other changes in plug-in B, like CVS and SVN offers).
+1 This is important for making it _easy_ to create small community contributions. The learning curve I have today for forking a repo, creating a branch, committing locally... may make sense for longer projects, but doesn't make sense for quick one-line fixes. Create Patch / Apply Patch is easy to understand and to use. It should be supported in egit as well.
Probably a duplicate of bug 341036. The request certainly matches bug 341036 comment 5. Also see bug 354800.
