Description Simon Archer CLA 2003-04-03 12:10:25 EST
The Install/Update perspective does not release file locks, which results in
the inability to delete files from the filesystem until Eclipse is closed.

I have seen this most recently when installing updates that reside on my local
drive which I navigate to using the "My Computer" entry in the Feature Updates
view. I navigate down to the site.xml and peform the updates successfully and
then close the Install/Update perspective. Then, when I try and delete the
updates from my filesystem I get an error from Windows telling me that the
files are locked:

Title: Error Deleting File or Folder
Error: Cannot delete <filename>.jar: It is being used by another person or
program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.

As the error message suggests, closing Eclipse releases the lock and allows the
file to be deleted.

I have not tried this with Eclipse 2.1, but I suspect that the problem still
exists. It's not that common for people to want to delete updates even after
they've installed them into Eclipse, but it is a realistic requirement.

It is not enough to suspect. We did some work in this area in 2.1, so please
try this with 2.1 (I think that it does not happen there).

I would if I could. But I don't have any updates that were built for 2.1. Are
the Eclipse 2.0.1 updates compatible?
Comment 3 Dejan Glozic CLA 2003-04-03 12:20:19 EST
No, they are older than 2.1 so you will not be able to install them.
Comment 4 Simon Archer CLA 2003-04-03 12:28:28 EST
My bug report was filed against 2.0.1 specifically because I could not test on
2.1. I always try the newest build possible.

My comments about it probably not working in 2.1 should be read as "Please test
this on 2.1 too".

Thanks for your help.

I could not reproduce the problem on Windows XP, with the latest integration
build.
