In the UML2 specification (see clause 9.3.7), there is some means to calculate a default multiplicity when a connector end is attached to a port of a part of a composite strucutre:

Extract from the aforementioned clause:
"Ports
If the end is attached to a port on a part of the internal structure and no multiplicity is specified, the multiplicity matches the multiplicity of the port multiplied by the multiplicity of the part (if any)."
