Description Rafael Chaves CLA 2011-09-20 17:08:39 EDT
The MPC home page has a couple of links to Indigi and Helios update sites, and they are both broken.

Go to: http://www.eclipse.org/mpc/

Try the following links:

Helios Update Site http://download.eclipse.org/mpc/helios/
Indigo Update Site http://download.eclipse.org/mpc/indigo/

Changing to invalid, both urls are Update sites. You must access it from Eclipse.

See how:

Thanks

But then why link to them and misrepresent them as download links? That just generates confusion.

Reopening for consideration.

We link to them because people ask us where our update site is. Do you have a suggestion for a better way of communcating the update site url?

I have seen people show the update site URLs as plain text (instead of HTML links).

I have also seen links with clear warnings close to them explaining they are update sites and cannot be opened via browser. The Eclipse.org web site generic 404 page does mention the URL being an update site as a possibility but users are trained not to read beyond a 404/Not Found. Better to tell users in clear terms that at the source.

Is there a use case that requires an actual link? If not, the former seems preferrable.

On marketplace, the update site is inserted inside of a textbox.

We could do the same on http://www.eclipse.org/mpc/ ?

For example, click on the green arrow on this page:

Closing this bug. This is fixed now:

Helios Update Site http://download.eclipse.org/mpc/helios/
Indigo Update Site http://download.eclipse.org/mpc/indigo/

thanks
