Description David Williams CLA 2011-09-15 00:49:16 EDT
Background and History:

Currently, we "store" our web pages for download sites in cvs, just to have a "safe" copy, etc. These are for 'download' server, 'archive' server, and 'build' server. These are stored in a project named "downloadsites" (no name space) in the webtools.releng project.

We never really deploy these automatically or anything, but when large changes are made, can make them using Eclipse, and then export them to the remote site.

Occasionally I "read in" what's in the remote site, to make sure it matches what's in cvs (since we usually make small changes, such as to buildBranches.php directly on the server).

I occasionally tag this project, such as with a release, but have been inconsistent, and we nearly alway just work out of HEAD.

Issues/actions:

A. They are a little of of sync now, so I will 'import' and make sure what is in cvs matches what is on servers.

B. As I looked at this, I was reminded the folders under downloadsites/webtools are a bit misnamed and haphazard. It it hard for me (much less anyone else) to figure out what goes where. Its possible ... just, not as obvious as it should be. Hence, I'd like to rename some folders and reorganize them. Have "top level" folders better correspond to the server they are destined for ... such as archiveServer-webtools, builderServer-shared-webtools, and downloadServer-webtools. This isn't perfect, but will give a good hint. Then, for example, archiveServer-webtools, we would have a "download" directory, which is what it is called on that archive server ... whereas now, we have a folder named 'archives' and one needs to figure out that files in 'archives' goes under
/home/data/httpd/archive.eclipse.org/webtools/downloads/

Motivation:

I'm trying to fix bug 357523 in Orbit, and wanted to use some of the files from Web Tools as "starting points", so need to do some of this "clean up" just to be sure I understand what's in webtools before using in Orbit.

I've done what I'm going to do. Its not perfect, I'm sure much more could be done, but hopefully is a little more "self documenting" now.

Note, if anyone ever does work in the future, they should do their own work to make sure the actual download server contents matches what is in cvs. What's there now is close, but may not be perfect ... and, who knows ... a month from now will be other changes.
