It allows us to easily maintain a test instances, such as https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugstest without any auth cookie collision.

I await your insightful suggestions as to how we can better accomplish such a thing while avoiding an redirect.

I am not sure if I understand your problem, but how about

https://bugs.eclipse.org
https://bugstest.eclipse.org

or

http://eclipse.org/bugs
http://eclipse.org/bugstest

?

I don't have a problem; everything is working just fine. I didn't open the bug.

I would have to mess with DNS servers and zone files to create a sandbox. A subdirectory/Alias is easier and faster.

Bugzilla traffic is classified higher priority than "www" website traffic -- having bugs.eclipse.org with a different IP (and a different hostname) makes this possible. It has different load balancing rules than www.eclipse.org. Also, bugzilla uses lots of web server memory so it is hosted on different servers than www.eclipse.org.

In the end, I'm not looking for solutions, but since you've called this 'stupid' I'm curious to know what else you have in mind to make it less stupid.

Would this work:

real bugzilla: http://eclipse.org/
sandbox: http://eclipse.org/bugstest

I assume you meant "bugs.eclipse.org" as the host.

Yes, the above would work. There would be a cookie collision from the real bugzilla and the sandbox should you attempt to log into the sandbox. No big deal, as I assume most people don't use the sandbox very often.

Regardless, I'm trying to understand what the actual problem is. If you simply type 'bugs.eclipse.org' you're transported to the real Bugzilla without any clicking. If you type bugs.eclipse.org/123456 you're transported to a specific bug. Is a redirect so problematic that you're asking me to invest time to mess with the configuration of Bugzilla -- one that has worked so well for the last 9+ years?

Oh, and just as a reminder, the /bugs subdirectory was set up by sysadmin staff long before the creation of the Eclipse Foundation.

There is no functional problem - it's just not how urls work. If you type maps.google.com you will not be redirected to maps.google.com/maps. That's all I am saying.

Closing. Thanks for your feedback.

I just went to gmail, and the URL is mail.google.com/mail/

Looks like no one know how to use URLs anymore! :)
