I had org.eclipse.swt checked out. From the project's context menu, I chose Compare With > HEAD Revision. This opens a modal progress dialog with a Cancel button.

It's bad in the first place that the comparison cannot run in the background, but what's even worse is that clicking Cancel only disables the Cancel button but does not cancel the comparison.
