An earlier fix (for bug 288894) was swallowing a connection exception that would have normally been shown as a message object in the tree. The fix for bug 353685 allows users of subsystems that don't support deferred queries to see a connection error after the fact. It would be preferable to find a more elegant solution but due to immediate interests this is the approach we're taking for now.  I've opened this bug so the issue can be revisited at a later time.
