Problem description: On HP-UX 11.00, selecting "system editor" from the "open with" context menu of a file produces a "Problems Opening Editor" error dialog saying "unable to open external editor for <filename>". This works fine on HP-UX 11.11. I am abled to open the system editor using the visual environment (CUE) on both versions of OS. Steps to reproduce: 1. Create a new Java project. 2. Left click on the ".project" file in the new project tree in the navigator view. 3. Right click in the navigator view and select "open with", and then choose "system editor". An error dialog appears. Found in: OS: HP-UX 11.00. Eclipse: V2.1 Build Id: 200303071024 (RC2) Comments: It may be something different in the environment of the two servers, but I have no idea what it might be.
Also occurs in HP-UX 11.11, Eclipse V2.1 Build ID: 200303192032 (RC3).
Also occurs in Sun Solaris 8, Eclipse V2.1 Build ID: 200303192032 (RC3).
GG to debug this with Chrix.
The hpux behaviour is not a problem. The "error dialog" is shown in the given scenario because there isn't a registered editor for files with extension ".project"; win32 has similar behaviour for unregistered extensions. Opening the hpux system editor for a .txt file, for instance, works fine. Solaris does have a problem, however, in that it's not getting its list of system editors, so it can't even externally open, for example, a .txt file. Moving to Chrix since it's an issue with Solaris thinking it's running with a Gnome desktop, which is wrong. Still happens in 3.0.
Also occurs in Sun Solaris 9 and HP-UX 11.11, Eclipse V3.0M7 Build ID: 200402122000.
Still occurs in Eclipse 3.0M8 (Build ID: 200403261517) on HP-UX 11.11 and Solaris 9 platforms.
Also occurs in Eclipse 3.0M9 (Build ID: 200405211200) on HP-UX 11i and Solaris 9.0 platforms.
This bug also occurs in Eclipse 3.0M9 (200405211200) for the AIX 5.3 platform
Also occurs in Eclipse 3.1M5a (Build ID: 20050219-1500) on Solaris 9.0 platform.

This is really ancient bug and at that time swt was using gvfs. Now it uses gio. Closing the bug but please reopen if you can still reproduce on supported version.
