For me, this looks like a problem of p2 and the Adobe update site but not a problem of MPC. Travor, did I understand you right that you hit Help > Check for Updates?
It looks like this was setup in a 'shared install' mode. That is, the original install directory is 'read-only'. In this case, you cannot update. You must login as a user who can write to that install area, and perform the update as that user.
Thanks Ian. I'll move this to the p2 bucket in case you want to take the chance and provider a better error message in this case.
Work has been done in this space in 3.7.
