...so that you could install a plugin for, say, PHP syntax checking and outline.

I am looking for a simple and minimal change for 0.2 to improve consumability. After 0.2, we should look at making the story better for cases where you don't want to provide both outline and error information from the same service.

Another use case would be the code from csslint.net.
