When working on a big screen, I have little use for the task trim widget as I usually have the task list visible. It's when working on a laptop screen that the trim would be really useful. The trouble is, it takes up too much space for a laptop screen. I think that the hyperlink indicating the active task is unnecessary as you generally know what task you are working on, and if you forget, it's easy to see in the drop down or tooltip. So I think the hyperlink should either be removed or there should be a preference to hide it. To still support opening the active task, the dropdown could be changed so that when you select the active task, it opens (currently it does nothing).
The purpose of the task trim widget is to display the active task. If you don't need this functionality I would recommend disabling the trim in the preferences. If you want a toolbar button for accessing the activation history you can enable the Task Navigation Extras command group instead. I agree that there is redundancy when the task list is visible. We have been discussing improvements for a while but haven't come up with a good solution. It was suggested for instance to only display the trim when the task list is in fast view but the platform does not have good extensibility to support that.
Thanks, I was not aware of that command group. If only there were some way to make it easy to discover - perhaps there should be a preference in the same place as the one about the trim? I am not sure that change would be intuitive. Selecting something in a list that is already selected should not have any other effect than selecting an item that is not selected. I would rather remove the active task from the list.
Makes sense. What about adding an "open active task" option to the bottom of the menu?

BTW, if you hold Shift when activating tasks the task is activated and opened. So, we could also make Shift+click work for the active task but I prefer your suggestion and removing the item.
