I suggest to deprecate (and later remove) the public AdapterFactory interface from RWT and the adapterfactory extension point and use it internally only.
RWT should focus on widgets and the like but rather not offer implementations of design patterns for its clients.
The current implementation fits exactly the needs of RWT but fails for sophisticated use cases (just to name one: registering different AdapterFactories for adaptables that inherit from other adaptables).

Those in need of an adapter implementation may resort to

Marked the AdapterFactory and the adapterfactory extension point as deprecated.
Changes are in CVS HEAD.
