Our upgrade strategy for orion.eclipse.org is to wipe out all data except account information:

One bad side-effect is that users lose the ability to view/edit their own profile. We will need to add that permission automatically if it is missing.

John, could you explain how you would like to address the issue? I think there are some ways of doing that. Moreover I disagree that always users should be able to edit their profiles. I can imagine configuration where users have only read-only access to their profiles.
