In gitk, the current branch is shown in boldface, whereas in Egit, it's marked with a separate "HEAD" label. The boldface view is more compact and more informative, because when there are multiple branches at the same commit it's not clear which one is the HEAD. See attached comparison screenshot. In Egit, it's not clear whether "master" or "new_branch" is checked out, unlike gitk.
