Improve icon used to indicate a task is scheduled in the task editor header. Currently the icon used is the same as used for today in the dropdown. That they are the same is quite confusing. It also sets up the expectation that the this week icon will appear in the header when the task is scheduled for this week, which would probably be a good thing, but which is not the case.

Ideally, there would be a different icon for each of the options in the dropdown, and the icon for the chosen date would appear in the header, and there would be a generic "scheduled" icon for dates further in the future.

A simpler solution would just be to remove the icon that appears next to today in the dropdown, and show that icon in the header when the task is scheduled for anything other than this week, and the this week icon when scheduled for this week.

Agreed. That has been bothering me as well. Let's revisit this for 3.6 and experiment with the suggested alternatives.
Comment 2 Sam Davis CLA 2011-02-25 16:59:23 EST
The icons in the drop down are also inconsitent with those in the task list: the task list uses one icon for today, a second for this week, next week, and two weeks, and a third for all others, whereas the drop down only has icons for today and this week.

Let's try to improve for 3.6.

icon in context menu

When you look at this, can you also consider adding an icon for the scheduling action in the task list context menu. (the top level menu item)
It came up in a UI review for the planning tools to have an icon for the scheduling context menu item, and since the release planner is using the same context menu contribution (ScheduleTaskMenuContributor) as the task list it would be simpler and more consistent to add the icon to that contribution directly.
Not sure if this is the right icon for the action, but this is where you could add an icon to the context menu contribution.

Changing summary as this affects the task list and context menus as well.

David's suggestion of having an icon in the context menu for "Schedule for" seems like a good one.

While we're at it, I think we should also change the text in the header of the Private section to say the day that the task is scheduled for. If I schedule a task for tomorrow, it says "This Week" and I have to hover to see a tooltip telling me which day. It seems silly.
