Description Anand Yashwanth CLA 2011-02-25 01:28:58 EST
Build Identifier: 20100917-0705

Recently i am facing problem with eclipse in startup takes long time. The following scenarios happens when starting eclipse.

1. Splash itself takes times to come.
2. Loading eclipse takes time (atleat 4-5 mins), once we select the workspace.( there is only one project in workspace)
3.Launching Run/Debug configuration takes time (atleast 5 mins)
4. And while installing the plugin using update site (where the server is local & plugin deplyed in the same server) calculating dependencise takes atleast 10 mins. but otherwise all other steps goes through smooth.

I recently went through some of the bugs on the slowliness behavior and applied the workaround that is specified in the link http://http://wiki.eclipse.org/FAQ_How_do_I_run_Eclipse%3F#Oracle.2FSun_VM_1.6.0_21_on_Windows

But no luck. The problem still exist. And daily life development this issue is affecting majorly. Hape someone can quickly help me out fixing the issue.

Java Used:

java version "1.6.0_24"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_24-b07)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 19.1-b02, mixed mode, sharing)

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
The above mentioned points 1,2 & 3 happens every first time start. The point number 4 happens all the time.

Which package (RCP/JEE/etc) do you have? Do you have any additional plugins installed?

Yes, it has the modelling packages (GMF,EMF & GEF) installed and EPF.
Comment 3 Prakash Rangaraj CLA 2011-02-25 06:54:37 EST
I suspect it could be one of those extra plugins you have. Can you try with the plain modelling package without any additional plugins on a fresh workspace? If that works, then we can forward this to EPF.

Nope, its not a problem with the plugin. I just installed a plain Eclipse Helios-SR1 and still face the same. issue. it tool almost 5-6 mins to open the Workspace launcher dialog. I have not installed any extra plugins here.

More Observation.

This problem has been happening for the last 3 weeks. Before that the same helios SR1 with the the above mentioned plugin was working fine.

Now even starting Galileo takes time (which we were using earlier to do development).

With an old or a new workspace?

Maybe it's your machine?

I suggest you take some snapshots and attach them here, see

Comment 7 Anand Yashwanth CLA 2011-02-25 11:45:04 EST
I have started it in a fresh workspace and the problem exist. And its not my machine. The whole of our team facing the same issue in the mentioned places.
Comment 8 Remy Suen CLA 2011-02-25 12:52:42 EST
Could it be related to the .eclipse folder? See bug 337012.
Comment 9 Dani Megert CLA 2011-02-26 01:19:20 EST
Can you try with a fresh build from
http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.6.2-201102101200/index.php

And please attach the stack traces.

Hi Dani,

I am not able to access the above mentioned link. But i downloaded eclipse with the following version & build ID.
Version: Helios Service Release 2
Build id: 20110213-1648

And i observed the same issue and there is no stack traces.

In between, i will try taking the snapshots using the below link & update it here.

http://wiki.eclipse.org/index.php/How_to_report_a_deadlock#Getting_a_stack_trace_on_Windows

May be will get a clue with that.

This doesn't seem to be a stack trace from starting Eclipse. I think we need to focus on each issue/scenario separately.

You say that with a fresh workspace, startup is very slow too. Can you attach stack traces for that scenario?

Can you provide the link that points to the version/download you use?

So this indicates to me that something in your env has changed:
a) Did you install a new Antivirus Software
b) Is Eclipse Running on a network share and e.g. a) was done on the server, ...

a). Yes, there is a regular Antivirus updates happens with the machines. But, it would be interesting how that can affect the eclipse. So that i will talk to system admins to take a look at it.

b). No, eclipse runs locally only on everyone's machine. But, we go through proxy servers to connect to internet. Will that have some effect on eclipse performance? What i mean is, is it trying to connect through proxy to something and is it taking time?

Eclipse is build from many different .jars and if you AV-Software e.g. intercepts every read of the them you might get into trouble. Eclipse Components e.g. Equinox also store a lot of cache informations and IIRC so does e.g. JDT to built up search indices, ... .

I am analyzing whether the issue is because of AV software. Will update the status once done.

It could also be a general issue with your hard disk. I suggest to check its speed. Some controllers have the bad habit to fall back to PIO only mode at some random point.

The best way to check is to use your/friends personal PC and try out the same version. If it loads faster, then the issue might be with your AV/other corporate software you have at office.

I doubt so. Anand mentioned that all of the developers have the same issue. Not just him.

Somehow doubting this point. Because it may not happen with every machine at the same time.:).

Anand,
Any updates on this? Does it has the sample problem beyond your office PCs?

Yes guys,

There is some good news. It seems to be because of AV software. We have put some filter on AV software to avoid jar's and eclipse. This makes eclipse to work normal. We are in observation with all the team members. But its working fine with me. I will give another update tomorrow and close this issue, if i get positive feedback from everyone.
Comment 22 Anand Yashwanth CLA 2011-03-08 04:10:34 EST
Hey All,

Its working fine after updating the AV software with exclusion eclipse related artifacts. Thanks for your help. Will close this issue
