The IP team has a dedicated server for scanning code. Although the server is 4 years old, it's still plenty powerful and modern. It is a bit short on RAM, since it only has 8 GB. As you can imagine, the code databases are quite huge, and this machine hosts the postgres db server AND the Java application to perform scanning. For $600 CAD we can bring this machine from 8G to 24G which will make code scans faster, and will support newer releases of the scanning software. Right now, with 8G, we barely meet the minimum requirements of the current version.
Seems reasonable to me. Anything to improve the IP process is a +1 from me.
FWIW, I can easily see us getting another 3 years of service from this server, if not more.
We have the unanimous support of the committer reps to grant $600 CAD toward this purchase. It's small, will extend the life of a machine and should improve code scans which in turn will improve the IP process. Please move forward with this Denis.
RAM has been ordered -- thanks for the quick turnaround.
As luck would have it, the retailer I had purchased this RAM from has gone AWOL. I have contacted my credit card and have begin the dispute process, and I'll place a new order for RAM shortly.
FYI -- the RAM from the new supplier has shipped. I've spoken with Janet re: planning the hardware upgrade, as well as a full software upgrade of the OS and the scanning software as well.
Nice! Should you create another bug to track when the RAM actually gets deployed and just link it to this bug? As a way to keep us notified.
