It's currently difficult to determine how many downloads are being initiated from the Connector Discovery. It would be ideal if each Connector Discovery entry had an additional URL that was visited during the installation process so installs could be counted using web statistics/analytics.
The extension point now has a statsUrl field that may optionally specifies a URL that retrieved when finish or cancel is pressed in the p2 install wizard. The request includes a couple of system properties for statistical purposes based on what Mylyn includes in the standard user agent. Here is an example: HEAD /stats/?id=org.eclipse.mylyn.trac&discovery=3.5.0&product=org.eclipse.sdk.ide&buildId=I20110127-2034&os=linux&arch=x86&ws=gtk&nl=en_CA

Is this a per-connector statusUrl or will the statistics be gathered on Eclipse infrastructure?
Yes, tracking is per connector (discovery entry). I haven't filled in the field for the Eclipse.org discovery jar but we could consider it and collecting stats on Eclipse.org. Please feel free to open a bug if you are interested in that.
Thanks. Filed bug #339445 .
