I took the latest I build + tool and tried to open /org.eclipse.e4.demo.simpleide/Application.e4xmi  I get the following error, followed by 3 more (probably caused by this one).

IIRC because the SimpleIDE extends the UIElements.ecore one can only open this file by launching an inner Eclipse and having the extended .ecore checked out

Like outlined in my comment you'll have to have "org.eclipse.e4.demo.simpleide.model" in your runtime-path else EMF can't load the XMI-File
