Description Goetz Heller CLA 2011-02-11 12:03:44 EST
Build Identifier: 20100917-0705

Trying to install new software packages or updating the whole eclipse installation fails consistently on Windows 7. (I tried with different bundels on different computers.) The Windows Resource monitor shows almost no network activity for eclipse.exe: Transmission rates, if any, are around 2 to 15 bytes per second. Contacting site takes several hours. After a very long time, the process stops with a message box telling me that one or another website could not be contacted. SInce reproducing this error another time steals me to much time I admit that I did not note the error number nor did I memorize this;-) - I think the problem is clear.
On one computer, Avira Antivir Premium Security Suite is running, on a different macine, it is Microsoft Defender. There are no known networking problems in my LAN.
I did not find any hints how to configure the firewall or anything else which might hinder update manager to work on windows 7. Such a hint, clearly positioned, could be a first fix.
My workaround: Copy eclipse installation to a Windows XP machine, or else use Windows XP mode, and start update/installation from there. This should work; at least for me it works, within a couple of minutes.
(I suppose this bug has been reported a million times but I was not able to find such a report in Bugzilla.)

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. In the Eclipse help menu, select "Check for Updates" or "Install new Software...".
2. Click the corresponding buttons as usual.

This is the first time I hear about such a problem on windows 7.
Could it also be caused by the existence of a proxy?
I'm surprised by the absence of feedback, this probably means that some bytes are going across since we have time outs in place.
Could you please check your network settings?

: I have a small network with two servers (Win Server 2003R2) and a couple of Workstations running in a Windows domain. Most of them run under Windows 7, two under Win XP. There is a WLAN the access point of which functioning also as a DSL router (Netgear). The WLAN is used by the work stations and gives them access to the servers and the internet. Win 7 machines and the servers have both IP V4 and IP V6 running, and there is no proxy. The machines are able to see each other on the whole network. There are to stand-alone work stations, one running Win 7, the other one Win XP. Generally, there are no known networking problems, e.g. Microsoft Update runs painlessly. When I’m starting Eclipse under Windows XP Mode on a Win 7 workstation or on a Win XP work station, Eclipse update works fine. By the way, all my machines get the latest updates and patches via Microsoft Update, so I think they are really up to date. The same holds for security software – I’m using Avira Premium Security Suite and, on two Workstations, Windows Defender. Eclipse on the non-domain Win 7 workstation exhibits the same problem as on a domain member.

Websites - e.g. market place or documentation - are opened from inside Eclipse without any problem, regardless of the hosting operating system. It looks to me as if Eclipse update works with concurrent downloads. When I checked with Windows Resource Monitor, there were 43 – 45 threads active (on Win 7), and on Win XP, where update succeeds, I deduce this from interlacing download messages jumping repeatedly between recurring filenames in the detail Window..

Please tell me if you need more information.

Kind regards,

Goetz

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
